Mission Statement

Our mission is to uplift working families by building a democratic and multicultural group that increases the power of working families to win fair treatment.

Who We Are

CAFE is a non-profit organization that promotes economic justice in South Carolina. Formed in Greenville in 1980, CAFE is now a statewide group with over 5,000 individual members across the state.

We at CAFE believe that everyone has a moral right to fair employment—to work that is free from bias, dishonesty and injustice. It is reasonable and right to expect fair employment.

The key to fair employment is having strong worker organizations that have the power to make needed changes on our jobs, in our communities and at the State House. Workers have few rights in South Carolina because most of us don’t belong to unions or other types of worker organizations.

CAFE provides a new way for people to join together to fight for fair employment, including those of us who’re not represented by unions.

What We Do

  • Provide Job Rights Education:

We educate ourselves about job rights by sponsoring workshops led by labor lawyers and CAFE staff, holding public meetings on job rights issues and keeping our members up-to-date on labor and employment issues

  • Lobby to Improve Labor Laws:

Business interests dominate our state legislature, and our labor laws are among the worst in the country. We’re fighting for the views of workers to be heard and respected by lawmakers, so that our labor laws can be improved.

  • Promote Group Action:

We engage in direct action to expose and correct unfair practices on the job and in our communities. Group actions include picketing and protesting, engaging in concerted activity on the job, and filing group complaints.
